Happy Tree Friends False Alarm Review (Xbox 360)

We need to start this review off with a little disclaimer. If you’ve never heard of the Happy Tree Friends before, don’t let these cute and cuddly critters fool you. These little guys definitely aren’t for kids. For nearly eight years, fans of the series have watched as the saccharin-laced creatures have fallen victim to all sorts of accidents, suffering through nearly every manner of maiming and dismemberment imaginable. Now the HTF cast is making its way to the Xbox LIVE Arcade in Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm, courtesy of Sega and developer Stainless Games.

The game starts off with the sugar addicted squirrel Nutty being forced into rehab after surviving a particularly gory encounter with a dump truck filled with candy. After turning a new leaf and kicking his sweets habit, HTF con men Lifty and Shifty introduce Nutty to a new vice … video games. Players then are put in Nutty’s shoes as he plays False Alarm, with the story unfolding more as the player (as Nutty) completes more of the game.

False Alarm, at its core, is essentially a riff off of the classic game Lemmings. As in Lemmings, the omnipresent player must use a small selection of abilities to help lead a group of mindless drones from Point A to Point B, avoiding all sorts of hazards along the way. The worst thing Lemmings ever had to face, though, was a steep fall from a cliff. In False Alarm, the player has to keep the Happy Tree Friends from falling into meat grinders, swinging blades, poison gas, and more. To help the hapless Happy Tree Friends along their way, the player has four abilities: Fire, Ice, Nitro, and the generic “Action”. Players can literally light a fire under the HTF characters to make them hot foot it along the level, they can freeze the crew to stop them in their tracks, the Nitro can blow apart things in their way, and the Action … well … does everything else like turning cranks, pulling levels, and otherwise manipulating the environment. These abilities can also be used in other ways, such as icing leaking vents, to overcome some of the obstacles in the Friends’ path.
