Elements of Destruction Review (Xbox 360)
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all those wasted hours watching the Weather Channel, it’s this: You don’t mess with Mother Nature. Thankfully, the guys at Frozen Codebase didn’t get that memo and they’ve given gamers a way to control the full, unbridled power of various natural disasters, essentially turning them into a literal force of nature in the new XBLA release, Elements of Destruction.

In EoD, players take on the role of Dr. Edgar Herbert, a scientific genius who’s dedicated the bulk of his life to the development of new technologies for a major corporate conglomerate. Shortly after Dr. Herbert creates a method for controlling natural events, the company in which he invested himself decides to give the good Doc his walking papers. Not exactly the wisest move on the planet, as Dr. Herbert has now taken it upon himself to exact a little bit of payback against the company—and the unsuspecting general public—by using his new weather control device to wreak havoc on a world he feels has done him wrong.
You’d tend to think that wrangling in twisters, thunderstorms and earthquakes would be a hassle, but actually the controls in EoD are pretty easy to get the hang of. As Dr. Herbert, you’re given control of three main forces of nature: Lightning, Earthquakes and Tornados, and you can cycle through available abilities with the right thumbstick. Players can fire lightning bolts at targets, doing minor damage to single targets and shorting out various electrical devices scattered around the city by chagrining up quick bursts. By selecting an epicenter, players can unleash huge earthquakes whose destructive power and range is charged by tapping on the A button as fast as possible. And last but certainly not least, tornados are generated by targeting buildings and then rotating the left thumbstick around to “wind up” the gale-force twisters.
